アメリカに非営利のTV局がある。PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) である。政府や州の交付金、企業、個人からの寄付が財源である。
そのPBSで昨年 (10/23/2012)、「疑いの気候変動 (Climate of Doubt) 」という番組が放映された。気候変動が世間から最も注目を集めたのは、元副大統領のアルゴアがノーベル平和賞をもらった2007年から1～2年である。最近はその関心が急激に冷えつつある。TV局のウェブサイトによると、一体この変化はなぜかというのがこの番組の趣旨だった。
気候変動に関心が持たれるようになってから、一貫して気候変動が人為的だという主張に疑問を投げかけてきた非営利の団体がある。シカゴの繁華街にオフィスを構える「The Heartland Institute」である。私事ながら近くに息子のアパートがある。1984年に設立されたこのグループは、自由市場を推進するために広範な活動をしている。気候変動を含む環境問題もその一つである。
上記の番組ではかなりの時間をさいてThe Heartland Instituteを紹介している。
The Heartland Institute が先月10万部の本を無料で気候変動に関心ある人々へ送付した。私のところへも送られてきた。Steve Gorehamの “The Mad, Mad, Mad World of Climatism” という本である。Alarmist の人から不満のメールもきたという。この本を紹介した時に気にいらなければ今年の寒い春を暖かくするために燃やしたらよいと冗談で言ったらしい。

そしたら数日前に上記のような写真がSan Jose State University の気象学のウェブサイトに載った。写真は教授と准教授である。一両日中に写真はウェブサイトから消されてしまった。
本はカラーでカットを多くし気軽に読めるように工夫してある。しかし、科学的にはできるだけ正確に手を抜かず書いてある。USAのAmazon で手に入る。日本の Amazon では入手可能かどうかはわからない。
本を執筆して10万部というコピーを只で送付して人為的な気候変動へ疑問を投げかける。小さな動きだが並大抵ではない。15年間温暖化が止まり、実際の気温変化がIPCC のモデルとははずれている。今年か、来年か知らないが、IPCC からAR5が出たらまたひと悶着があるのだろう。
