R.J. Salvadorが、以下で要約するように82% の精度で黒点と地球温度との関係式を見出した。現在の気候変動が5%以下の精度しかないIPCCの気候モデルとそれを使ったシミュレーションにたよるべきか、あるいは82%の精度で太陽の黒点の数に関連づけて考えるべきか、言い直せば太陽の活動と関連づけて解釈すべきかは明確である。CO2濃度の上昇による人為的な温暖化というより自然サイクルにより温度が変わっているという証拠でもある。
