上記論文は、下図で示すように人為的に排出される CO₂ と大気のCO₂ 濃度が直接関係のないことを示す。2003 年からCO₂ の排出量は 25% 増加した。それにもかかわらず大気中のCO₂ の増加速度は 2002/2003 年から遅くなっている。1990-2003 年の間は人為的なCO₂ 排出量は比較的安定していた。1997-1998 年のエルニーニョの時はCO₂ の増加速度は急上昇した。一方、 2003-2011 年の間はCO₂ 排出量は ~25% 上昇したが増加速度は 1999 年から一定である。温度もこの間横ばいだった。これは人為的に排出されたCO₂ が大気中のCO₂ 濃度を決めるのではないことを示す。人間はCO₂ 濃度をコントロールする第一の要因ではない。温度がCO₂ 濃度をコントロールしている。海からのCO₂ の放出が温度によって変わるからかもしれない。
